Day 36 - Our closest friends

May 10, 2024

Started the day off with a nice morning walk.

This is the day I began to notice my love for taking photos of trees.

Empty mundane spaces also capture my attention. There is something extremely satisfying about clean lines and a sense of serenity felt when taking these images. I was looking at the Leica 28mm f2.8 Elmarit recently and read that it has an impressively low amount of distortion. I thought my next lens would be a 50mm, but given the price of the Elmarit, I might go that route.

We then went over to our friends’ place. Youjin did something to A’s hair—something about highlights I think and S did a self down-perm, hence the interesting use of saran wrap. This was near Youjin’s birthday so A prepared a gift for her in a cute box. S and A always cook amazing food that they share with us. I was still feeling sick this day and still only able to consume fluids, but by some miracle, I gorged myself on the food.

These are probably our closest friends. I met S in university and we’ve been close ever since. It was a bizarre meeting—an incredibly whitewashed Korean who never spoke Korean outside of home and an incredibly Korean Korean whose English was questionable at best—but it has blossomed into perhaps my strongest relationship. We’ve reached a point where it truly does feel like family and I am grateful for them both. Youjin has struggled with homesickness on and off so I am always grateful for S and A, as they provide a source of community for her here.

They also have started a really entertaining YouTube channel that is doing well: https://www.youtube.com/@Jimiireumii

That’s it for today’s fragmented thoughts.

All images shot on Leica M-P 240 and Voigtlander 35mm f2 Ultron.
